- Aim:
- In order to make life a bit more normal in these strange times we have set up the Limerick Chess Club at lichess.org This will allow members to play classical or blitz games against each other. We are also looking at the idea of setting up some virtual tournaments for members. Cork Chess Club have also set up a similar virtual club and have expressed an interest in running inter-club matches in the future. The main idea is to set up a friendly local environment for casual and competitive chess games. In keeping with being a virtual chess club all trophies and prizes will also be virtual which hopefully reduces any temptation to use technical assistance. The lichess server seems to be quite comprehensive but a bit overwhelming at first so I'd recommend taking some time to look around and get comfortable. I also found the onscreen board seems quite different to a physical board so I'd suggest using a real board when playing longer time limits though that obviously won't work well for blitz. I guess it will get easier once once we've used it a few times.
- 3 Steps to join:
- 1. Create a lichess account. If you already have an account on lichess you can skip this and use your existing account. Connect online to https://lichess.org on your browser. On the top right hand side of the homepage click on the sign in button. This brings you to a page where you can create a free account with your chosen user name, password and email address. You also need to click the buttons to accept the conditions of lichess. This creates your username and password for lichess.
- 2. Request to join Limerick Chess Club team when logged on by clicking on Community tab at the top of the page and click again on Teams. In the Teams list page there is a Search box in the top right. Key in the word Limerick and hit Return. You will see Limerick Chess Club, click on it and the Club page should open. Click the join Team button and send a request to join the Club. Next time I log in I will see the notification and can approve your request.
- 3. Let us know who you are. Since the account names don't have to be linked to your real name please send an email to limerickchessclub@aspennet.ie letting us know your lichess username and your real name. We will use that to approve the membership requests from existing members and associates/friends
