It was an exciting, well organised tournament held in the relaxed setting of the
Auburn Lodge hotel where a lot of the players stayed and played over 3 days and two
nights from the 18th-20th April. Some enjoyed their Guinness or beer while others
got their kicks exclusively from the game. Seventy four players competed in the two
sections over the six rounds and some came from as far as Brazil, Netherlands,
Germany, Scotland, and as close as Bray, Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Kilkenny
Waterford, Killimer, Kilrush and Knocknacarra.
Competition was keen with some
disputes, and losses on time when ahead on material were a frequent occurrence as in
one particular fifth round game. But that's what makes exciting chess. Short quick
games and long endgames for which mental stamina is required. Queen's gambit, Ruy
Lopez, Alekhine, Grob, Dutch or Sicilian Defences, we had them all. And through the
mists of battle on the 64 squares, the winners were eventually decided, with Karl
McPhillips victorious on tiebreak in the Open section and Eoin Moran triumphant in
the Under 1400 section. Some players performed above themselves such as Denis
O'Connell and Oissine Murphy, besides the usual favourites.
Competition is good for
the human mind and kids develop confidence playing this game while the older players just
enjoy the craic of it all. Well done to John Cassidy, Rory Quinn, Nick Larter and
Gerry Graham for organising such a good tournament along with other helpers.
Congratulations to all the prize winners. Win, lose or draw, we all had a great time
because its the challenge and excitement of it that draws us back to such
tournaments and not just to win prizes. The thrill is in participating. Chess Life - be in it.
